SHERIFF'S POSSE

History of the Dallas County Sheriff’s Posse

The Sheriff’s Posse was started in 1970.  It was started by the Sheriff at that time, Jerry Cox.  The Posse originally had a cut-off number of 25 members.  Because of the cap, there was a waiting list of 60 people.  Once a member either quit or moved out of the county, a person from the waiting list would join.

The credentials to join the Posse were that one must have a horse and a way to haul it, and be ready to go upon notice.  A member must live in the county, be at least 21 years of age, and have no felonies and no misdemeanors other than minor traffic violations. The reason the Posse originated was to help look for lost children, elderly patients who had wandered away, and to search for marijuana growing in the county.

Meetings were held once a month.  Every year a celebration was held in honor of the Posse.  It was a two day event with members and their families.  There was a trail ride with a Band and a BBQ.

Today they’re a much larger group than when they began over thirty years ago.  When it started one must live in the county to be a member, now they are allowed to live outside the county and be a member. The Posse still does what they originated to do but a little more.   Now, they not only help the sheriff’s department but also help the community.  When there is a sequestered jury they help guard day and night, help on the Niangua River in the summer, park cars at both the Buffalo Fair and the Louisburg Picnic, are at various locations on Halloween night in case anyone needs assistance, and provide Christmas Dinners for several families in Dallas County.  Along with the many things the Posse does, they also donate money to many worthy causes in Dallas County.  In the past they have donated money to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life,  Project Graduation, Dallas County Fair, and various other worthy causes.
